Anrich Nortje is a fast bowler who has received praise from fellow cricketer Dale Steyn for being “extremely exciting.” Both Nortje and Steyn come from Uitenhage, a town located north of Port Elizabeth, known for its large Volkswagen factory.
Nortje is known for regularly delivering pitches at speeds over 150 kph and for his dangerous bouncer deliveries. Nortje attended Brandwag High School and later earned a Bachelor of Commerce degree in financial planning from Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, where he played varsity cricket. He had a strong start to his first-class franchise career, taking 20 wickets in four matches in the 2016-17 season and finishing in fifth place in the first-class wicket charts in the 2017-18 season, when he was the second-highest wicket-taking seam bowler. Nortje’s biggest opportunity came in the shorter format of cricket.
Beginning of Career
Late in 2018, Nortje made a big impression in the Mzansi Super League, a T20 franchise tournament in South Africa. He helped the Cape Town Blitz by capturing eight wickets in three games with his quick bowls. He had to leave the tournament though because of an ankle injury that needed surgery. He started playing again at the beginning of 2019, making his ODI debut against Sri Lanka in March. He did well in four of the five games in the series, with his best performance coming at his home stadium in Port Elizabeth, when he had a 3-for-57 total. Many people felt that he ought to be a part of South Africa’s World Cup squad based on his performances.
Nortje’s career seemed to be on the rise when he was signed by the Kolkata Knight Riders for the 2019 Indian Premier League, but he had to withdraw from the tournament due to a shoulder injury. He was still named in South Africa’s World Cup squad and had recovered by the time the tournament started, but broke his thumb in training before the team’s departure. Nortje finally had the opportunity to tour with the national team in September-October 2019, when he was selected for a T20I and Test series in India. He made his debut in both formats during that tour.
A career in Test Cricket
Anrich Nortje played his first international test match against India on 10 October 2023. India won that match by innings & 137 runs. Enrich’s performance was not so good in that series. He bowled for 25 overs and gave 100 runs but did not take any wickets. He got five maiden overs and ECON was 4.00. With the bat, he just scored 3 runs in 28 balls. Mohammed Shami of India took his wicket in that match.
After that series, he improved his performance and from 2019 to 2023 he faced many strong teams like India, England, West Indies, Pakistan and Australia. Gradually he becomes a very important part of the team. South Africa has won many matches based on his performance.
Till now he has played 30 test innings and taken 64 wickets instead of 1786 runs. His average is 27.90 and his ECON is 3.71. Enrich’s strike rate is 45.00. In one match he took four wickets. In three matches he took 5 wickets.
On 4th January 2023, he played his recent Test series against Australia. The match was played in Sydney. It was a draw match. Anrich Nortje’s performance was quite good in that series.
